Abraham Coss, a son of Dutch parents, was born in Guilderland, Albany county, New York, October, 1812, died July 3, 1892, after a life of eighty years spent in the same town. He was a farmer in prosperous circumstances; a member of the Reformed church and a Whig. He married Gertrude Clay. Children:

  1. David, married Eva Kaley, of Guilderland; children: Aaron, George, Margaret A. and Samantha.
  2. Frederick, left his home in Guilderland, no further record.
  3. Abraham (2), of whom further.
  4. Amy, born 1832; married William Clark; removed to Wisconsin, where both died.
  5. Maria (Polly), married Gilbert A. Sharp, of Guilderland; both deceased; children: Gertrude, Sarah, Ida and Gilbert.
  6. Adalaide, married William Brewer, whom she survives, a resident of Guilderland; no issue.
  7. Jane M.

(II) Abraham (2), son of Abraham (1) and Gertrude (Clay) Coss, was born in Guilderland, Albany county, New York, in 1830, died December 28, 1903, and is buried in Helderberg cemetery, near Guilderland Center. He was a successful farmer, succeeding his father on the old homestead. He was a Republican in politics, and a member of the Reformed church. He married, in Rotterdam, Sarah Van Valkenburgh, born May 10, 1832. She survives him and occupies the farm with her son; she is an active member of the Reformed church; she is a daughter of John Van Valkenburgh, of Rotterdam, Schenectady county. Mrs. Abraham Coss is the only survivor of a large family. Children:

  1. George, born in 1851, died June 20, 1905, at Schenectady; he was employed in the General Electric works at Schenectady; he married Lucinda Miller, who survives him; children:
    1. Worthington, married Ella Comstock; children:
      1. Edna D., born December 28, 1893, and
      2. Myrtle, at home.
  2. David, of whom further.
  3. Ammett Franklin, born 1858; occupies the old farm with his mother; he is deputy sheriff of Albany county; married Annie Relyea, of Guilderland; children:
    1. Addie, died in infancy;
    2. Alta (twin of Addie), married Charles Pilger, of Albany;
    3. Leland, born August, 1892.

(III) David, son of Abraham (2) and Sarah (Van Valkenburgh) Coss, was born January 16, 1853, on the old homestead. He was reared on the farm that had been in the family for one hundred and thirty-five years. After his marriage he purchased one hundred and twenty acres of the old Major John Fuller estate in Guilderland, which he still owns, and cultivates. He is a capable and energetic man of business, well known and respected. He is a member of the Guilderland Dutch Reformed church, and a Republican. He married, in Guilderland, January 30, 1879, Sarah Tygert, born in New Scotland, May 18, 1852, daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Fuller) Tygert. Thomas Tygert was born in the town of Knox, October 5, 1825, died on the Fuller farm in Guilderland, February, 1908, son of John Tygert, of Columbia county, who was born there of Irish parentage. He removed to Knox, and died at the age of eighty years in New Scotland. He was twice married and had eleven children by his first wife and two by the second wife. Catherine Fuller, wife of Thomas Tygert, was the daughter of Major John Fuller and the sister of Hon. Aaron Fuller, both men of prominence. John Fuller Tygert, eldest son of Thomas and Catherine Tygert, married Minerva Hotaling and resides in Rutherford, New Jersey. Their daughter Florence married Edward Eisenacher, of New York City, and has Ruth, Louis and Alice. David and Sarah Coss have a son, Lloyd, born June 27, 1884; married, September 30, 1908, Lulu, born October 8, 1885, daughter of David T. and Louise (Reid) Hearst.
