Captain Thomas Atwood, of town of Wethersfield, Connecticut, tradition says was for a time captain of a company under Oliver Cromwell. He was a physician of some note and died in 1682. He married Abigail ————; children: Abigail, Andrew, Jonathan, Josiah.

(II) Dr. Jonathan Atwood, son of Captain Thomas and Abigail Atwood, was born June 8, 1675. He removed to Woodbury, Connecticut, where he died January 1, 1733. He married Sarah Terrill, Thanksgiving Day, November 5, 1701. Children:

  1. Nathan, died at the age of twenty-four years;
  2. May, died young; May (2);
  3. Lieutenant Jonathan, married Hannah Sherman;
  4. Oliver, of whom further.

(III) Oliver, son of Dr. Jonathan and Sarah (Terrill) Atwood, was born March 11, 1717, died January 30, 1810. He married (first) Lois Wheeler, November 12, 1740; married (second) Nancy Wells; married (third) Naomi Fairchild. Children by first wife:

  1. Deacon Nathan, born 1741, married Rhoda Warner;
  2. Gideon, born March 3, 1743, died unmarried;
  3. Elisha, of whom further;
  4. Ann, married Simeon Martin;
  5. John, born March 19, 1749;

by second wife:

  1. Wells, married Lydia Atwood;
  2. Nancy, married (first) Allen Carrington; (second) Elihu Sanford.

(IV) Elisha, son of Oliver and Lois (Wheeler) Atwood, was born April 27, 1745, died May 24, 1825. He married Mary, daughter of Dr. Henry Skelton. Children:

  1. Oliver, married (first) Susanna Monson; (second) May Handy;
  2. Henry S., married Ruth Gurnsey;
  3. Elisha, married (first) Lucy Carr; (second) Charlotte Gurnsey;
  4. Gideon, died in infancy;
  5. Gideon (2), married Sally Strickland;
  6. May A., died in infancy;
  7. Mary, married Friend Guernsey;
  8. Wheeler, of whom further;
  9. Lucy, married William Hopkins;
  10. Reuben, married Alica Platt;
  11. Harvey, married Betsey Guernsey;
  12. Betsey, married Joseph Bryan;
  13. Sheldon, died at the age of eighteen years.

(V) Wheeler, son of Elisha and Mary (Shelton) Atwood, was born 1778. He married (first) Susannah Stoddard; (second) Harriet Riggs. Children by first wife:

  1. Daughter, died young;
  2. Horace S., born 1800, married Maria Morris;
  3. John N., of whom further;
  4. Susan, married Bransford Foot and removed to New York state;
  5. William R., married Roxy Morris;
  6. Samuel, married Clarinda L. Jones;
  7. Sarah, married Gideon Crane;
  8. Martha;
  9. Mary, twin of Martha, married Julius Smith;
  10. Wheeler, married Louisa Judd.

Children by second wife:

  1. Franklin, died young;
  2. Dwight Starr;
  3. Lewis Hart, born May 19, 1843;
  4. Amos Gidley.

(VI) John N., son of Wheeler and Susannah (Stoddard) Atwood, was born 1802. He removed to Columbia county, New York. He married Lois Strickland. Children:

  1. Stephen C., married Ann David, widow, daughter of Nathan Woodward;
  2. William, married Betsey French;
  3. Susannah, married Theodore Merwin;
  4. Sarah;
  5. John, of whom further;
  6. Hanson;
  7. Abigail.

(VII) John, son of John N. and Lois (Stickland) Atwood, was born in Columbia county, New York. He removed to the city of Hudson where he was a bookkeeper and accountant. He married Laura Seymour. Children: Albert, of whom further; Lillian, now living in Greenport, New York, married (first) Percy Strong and had five children; married (second) Edwin Green.

(VIII) Albert, son of John and Laura (Seymour) Atwood, was born in Hudson, New York, December 27, 1865, died December 8, 1905. He was educated in the public schools, and entered the dry goods business when a young man, continuing successfully until his retirement in 1900. He was strictly the man of business and did not mingle in political or public affairs. He was a Republican, and a member of the Hudson fire company. He married, October 10, 1891, Barbara, daughter of Anton and Margaret (Slack) Kiefer. Anton Kiefer was born in Germany, came to the United States in 1875, settled at Hollow View, Columbia county, New York, where he was employed at the knitting mill. He died in Hudson, New York. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Atwood:

  1. Frances Lillian;
  2. Laura S.,
  3. Frederick, born June 22, 1897, died March, 1898;
  4. Albert Seymour, February 23, 1902.
