REUBEN, inn keeper in 1785, kept a public house on the west side of Church Street, on what is now number 24. This was a popular resort, at which public meetings were held. His house was burned on Pinxter day, 1803; the fire having commenced in a hatter's shop, standing next south, burned thence to State Street. Tradition has it, that Burr's carpenters, then at work upon the Mohawk bridge, gave each one day's work towards rebuilding Simonds's house, which was framed, raised and boarded in one day, and that he moved in the next day. He made his will Dec. 8, 1809, proved June 27, 1810; spoke of wife Elisabeth and Reuben Simonds Blood, but mentioned no children. He d. May 5, 1810, a. 74ys.
