The Longshores are of English descent, the family in Canajoharie, New York, through the marriage of Solomon Longshore and Jeanette Van Alstyne, descending from two of the oldest Dutch families in the Mohawk Valley, the Van Alstyne and Putnam.
(I) Solomon Longshore married Jeanette, daughter of John and Maria (Putnam) Van Alstyne. Children: David, of whom further; Mary Ella, married Leslie Quant; William, married Mary Fox, child, James; John, deceased; Miles, deceased; Herbert, married Carrie Snyder; children: Earl, born April 7, 1891, and Hazel, May 8, 1893.
(II) David, son of Solomon and Jeanette (Van Alstyne) Longshore, was born in Canajoharie, New York, November 27, 1854. He attended the public school until he was twelve years of age when he began working as bell boy in the Hamilton Hotel at Sharon Springs, New York, where he remained five years. He then attended school for a time and after finishing his studies made arrangements by which he became owner and proprietor of the Farmers' Hotel at Canajoharie. He took possessession November 5, 1885, and conducted it continuously for twenty-five years. In 1910, he sold the property and purchased a farm of two hundred acres on which he removed and operates as a stock and dairy farm. He is a member of both lodge and encampment of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and of the Dutch Reformed church. In politics he is a Democrat. During his long residence in the village he has aided in its improvement by the erection of business blocks of a substantial character. He married, January 13, 1878, Alice, born February 3, 1856, daughter of Peter and Jane (Kane) Rinehart and granddaughter of Andrew Kane. Children of Peter and Jane Rinehart:
