Doct. WILLIAM, settled in Schenectady about the year 1757, as a physician. The following notice of him, taken from the Litchfield, Conn., Post, of June, 1827, is interesting, as showing his vigor and activity at an extreme old age: "Dr. William Adams, of Schenectady, N. Y., aged 97, arrived in this village, having borne without much apparent fatigue, the journey from Albany, a distance of more than 70 miles, in the stage, in one day. With the activity of middle age, he left his bed at one o'clock at night, and unattended, except by casual passengers, performed his long journey with the purpose of spending the summer with a beloved granddaughter, who resides in this village; and the next day after his arrival, was seen moving, with ease and agility, around our streets and rejoicing in the pleasantness and beauty of spring. He has been more than 70 years a practicing physician in Schenectady, and was a surgeon under Sir Wm. Johnson, in the old French war." Dr. Adams had his residence on the lot now occupied by McCamus & Co., on State Street. His wife, Margaret, d. Ap. 14, 1800, a. 66 yrs., leaving two sons, James, who d. Ap. 20, 1803, a. 35 yrs., and Archibald Hamilton.

Appel

ADRIAN Janse, alias Van Leyden, tavern keeper and schoolmaster at Albany, had two sons, Jan, who "was grievously wounded at the sacking of Schenectady, in 1690" and was on that account granted 6 pounds by the Governor and Council; and Willem who "was wounded in his limbs at the burning of Schenectady," and for that reason was exempted, in 1693, from the payment of 30s excise. They removed to New York about 1693. Willem had two ch. bp. in New York: Maria Magdalena, July 5, 1693; and Simon, bp. May 26, 1695. The dau. m. Johannes Vrooman of Schenectady. One Jacob Appel was member of the church in 1703.

Aukes

DOUWE, alias De Freest, was born in 1639. He came over in Sept., 1663, in the ship Stettin, from Arnhem, and settled in Schenectady as an inn keeper on the lot on the south corner of Mill Lane and State Street, near the old church. Leisler made him justice of the peace in 1689. He married for his second wife, Maria, dau. of Aernout Cornelis Viele, and widow of Matthys Vrooman, in 1685, and had a dau., Margariet, bp. Mar. 21, 1686. In 1690, his wife, two children and negro woman, Francyn, were killed by the French and Indians in their attack upon the town. He escaped, and was living as late as 1718. In 1709 he conveyed all his real estate to Cornelis Viele, whom he calls his [adopted ?] son.

Bancker

GERRIT, came from Amsterdam, where his brother Willem was a merchant as late as 1700. He was in New Amsterdam before 1655, and two years later in Beverwyck, where he continued to reside till his death, about 1691. His home lot, in Albany was on the south side of Yonker [now State] Street, the third east from Pearl Street, as it then was. When Arent Van Curler began the settlement of Schenectady in 1662, he became one of the original fifteen proprietors. Farms number six on the Bouwland, were allotted to him, and his village lot comprised the northerly quarter of the block, bounded by Washington, Union, Church and State Streets. His son Evert held this property till 1702, when he disposed of it to Isaac Swits. Gerrit Bancker married Elisabeth, daughter of Dirk Van Eps, and sister of Jan Van Eps, one of the first settlers of Schenectady. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bancker removed to New York and engaged in trade. She died July 3, 1693, aged 70 years, leaving a large property for thosetimes, to her only son Evert. Besides Evert, who was born in Albany, Jan. 24, 1665, Mr. Bancker had a daughter Anna, who married Johannes De Peyster of New York, Sept. 21, 1688, and perhaps a dau. Maria licenced to marry Cornelis De Peyster, also of New York, Sept. 19, 1694.

EVERT, son of Gerrit, was a merchant in Albany, but retired to his farm in Guilderland during the latter part of his life; he was buried on the 10th of July, 1734; 1692 he was justice of the peace; 1695-6 and 1707-9 mayor of Albany; he m. Elisabeth, dau. of Stoffel Janse Abeel, Sept. 24, 1686; she was born Mar. 23, 1671, and was buried Mar. 20, 1734. His home lot in Albany, was on the south side of Yonker [State] Street, next east of his father's, and fourth east of Pearl Street. He made his will Mar. 13, 1734, proved July 31, 1734, in which he gave to his son Johannes 50 pounds, "provided he continued to live with me till my decease, or till I dispose of my farm where I now live." He mentioned the following children, who are to share alike in his estate: Christoffel, Willem, Jannetie, Adriaan, Gerardus and Johannes. Ch: Gerardus, b. Feb. 11, 1688; Neeltie, b. Barheit or Barheyt

There were two early settlers of this name, Andries Hanse Barheit, "yeoman of ye Great Flatt neer Coxhacky" and Jeronimus Hanse Barheit, perhaps of the same place. The latter m. for his second (?) wife Rebecca Evertse, Ap. 9, 1684, in Albany, where were baptised the following Ch: Margriet, Oct. 4, 1685, and Wouter, Aug. 4, 1691. He made his will Aug. 22, 1713, proved Feb. 23, 1722/3 in which he spoke of his wife Rebecca, son Wouter, and one daughter. He may have had a son Johannes by a former wife.

WOUTER, son of Jeronimus above, m. Rachel Winne of Albany, Mar. 28, 1715. He was buried Jan. 8, 1732. Ch. bp. in Albany: Hieronimus, Feb. 12, 1716; Teuntie, Sept. 1, 1717; Margarita, May 15, 1720; Margarita, May 5, 1723; Tytje, May 16, 1725.

Capt. CALEB, settled in Schenectady about 1703. He was an inn keeper, licenced "to draw or sell liquor by retaile." His home lot was on the south corner of Church and Union Streets, where after his death, in 1733, his widow continued the business, together with trade in groceries and dry goods, until her death. Caleb Beck made his will Mar. 8, 1728/9, proved Sept. 29, 1733, in which he spoke of his wife Anna, to whom he left the bulk of his property, which after her death was to pass to his son Caleb. He gave "to my son Caleb my waering cloaths from head to foot, and that he chues the best gun in the house and has it mended and prepared as he thinks fit for himself, and my Pocket Pistols and sword, with all my printed books and the Great New Chest." Borsboom

PIETER JACOBSE, steen bakker (brick maker), early settled in Beverwyck. In 1662, when the land was taken up at Schenectady, he became one of the fifteen first proprietors. His home lot in the village, was the north quarter of the block bounded by Front, Washington, Union and Church Streets. He also had two farms allotted to him on the bouwland. In his will, which was recorded in New York, Oct. 18, 1686, he mentioned his son Cornelis, and four daughters. An inventory of his property was made May 30, 1689, by Barent Janse Van Ditmars, Isaac Cornelise Swits and Douwe Aukes; it amounted to 1630 guilders. His son Cornelis probably died young; his daughters who survived him were Anna, who m. Jan Pieterse Mebie; Maritie, wife of Hendrick Brouwer; Fytie, wife of Marte Van Benthuysen, and Tryntje, wife of John Oliver.
